Crocker Snow, Jr., an award-winning foreign correspondent, and Harvard College alum, inherited half of Muskeget, a 250-acre island halfway between Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. He has been watching and recording its environmental changes since he was a boy. The 1972 Marine Mammals Protection Act protected the island’s endangered grey seals; now they blanket the island. Meanwhile, the area is experiencing a growing presence of great white sharks and a diminution of striped bass.
Snow chronicled these environmental changes in a book, Muskeget: Raw, Restless, Relentless Island. The primary objective of the 1972 Act was “to maintain the health and stability of the marine ecosystem.” Obviously, the outcome at Muskeget was contrary to this goal. Crocker will discuss whether it could have been avoided and what can be done at present.
