By any measure, Harvard ranks among the top tier of world universities, with superb faculties, highly qualified students, deep collections, and the financial and physical resources essential to research in many essential fields and education across the liberal arts and professions. Yet it finds itself the subject of increasing criticism, in an era when virtually all institutions are in increasing disfavor—elite ones particularly so. And the institution has surely made plenty of its own problems: during its nearly 400-year history, Harvard has had just 30 presidents—but from 2000, six of those have held office, suggesting a degree of instability, most notably in the form of two failed presidencies, two interims, and a catastrophic financial crisis.

John will attempt to put into perspective the University’s strengths and its challenges during the past couple of decades, a period of rapid change, in disciplines and in other ways. He will sketch some paths forward, given this and other universities’ essential role in a world in need of new knowledge and well-trained, ethical leaders; and to invite discussion with members of the audience.

About the speaker
image-38--minJohn S. Rosenberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended public schools there before enrolling in Yale College, from which he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in political and economic systems. He worked as a writer and editor for a nonprofit institution in Washington, D.C., before returning to New England in 1977, where he did freelance writing and editing for newspapers and magazines and on a consulting basis for organizations. From 1981 to 1987, he worked in an insurance company (communications, investor relations) and a financial-services firm. He resumed writing, editing, and communications consulting for business managements and nonprofit institutions from 1987 to 1991, before becoming editor of Vermont Magazine. Effective January 1, 1995, Rosenberg succeeded John Bethell ’54 as editor of Harvard Magazine, where he and a small team of superb colleagues have had the honor and privilege of covering one of the world’s preeminent universities—and serving the world’s best readership.
